The band program at Floyd E. Kellam High School in Virginia Beach, VA has three parts that students can take advantage of during their high school years. Each of them can play a role in developing the student's music education and individual growth. The students are free to particiapte in any or all three of the programs during each academic year.
Kellam Marching Knights
The Kellam Marching Knights are an integral part of the community in which we live. It is the most often viewed component of our program within the public eye each year. The Marching Knights are an outstanding way for your student to become active within the school’s extra-curricular activities and make friends and memories that will last a lifetime.
The Marching Knights rehearse, and compete in the summer and throughout the fall. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm to 8:30pm, and on Wednesday afternoons from 2 to 4:30pm. Members of the Marching Knights for the 2009-2010 competitive season have already been selected; however we will gladly accept any new students who wish to join us in the stands for the football games! Kellam Winds
The Kellam Winds are the premiere concert ensemble of the Kellam Band Program. Typically, this ensemble is audition based, and membership is always determined based upon director recommendation. The Kellam Winds are comprised of two major components – the wind section, and the percussion section. The Wind Ensemble is a performance-based class. In addition to a regularly scheduled after-school rehearsal, the Wind Ensemble students will prepare audition material for All-District Band, as well as participate in Solo and Ensemble Festivals. Students in this class are expected to achieve highly at the Grades 4, 5, and 6 musical levels.
Kellam Jazz
The Kellam Jazz Ensemble is a highly select ensemble and closely represents the traditional seventeen-piece big band. This ensemble is audition based, and membership is always determined based upon director recommendation. The Kellam Jazz Ensemble is comprised of two major components – the wind section, and the rhythm section. Kellam Jazz will focus primarily on the swing standards of the 30’s and 40’s, as well as contemporary Bee-bop, Latin Jazz, Funk, and music from the cool period. The Jazz Ensemble is a performance-based class and will tour extensively over the course of the school year.
